TUCSON, Ariz. – The Glendale women's soccer team had its season come to a close on Thursday night in a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 1 seed Pima Community College in the Region I Division II semifinals. The Gauchos finish their year with a record of 6-7-2.
When these teams first met in September in Tucson, the Aztecs posted a 7-1 win, but Thursday showed the maturation of the Glendale side and was nothing like that earlier matchup. Despite being limited on numbers due to injury and illness, the Gauchos defended for their life in the first half and looked to spring counters whenever an opening presented itself. Though Pima put eight shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, Mayra Kruk was in the right spot each time to keep things scoreless at the break.
Pima had a shot off the post within the first two minutes of the second half restart, but otherwise Glendale continued to stymie the Aztecs in front of goal. When Pima did finally take the lead in the 63rd minute, it was from a bit of trickery rather than open play. A foul outside the penalty area gave the Aztecs a free kick from about 20 yards, but Pima took the shot quickly rather than waiting for the Gauchos to set up their wall. The first shot caromed into a crowd and was deflected away, but the ball fell to Yaya Cervantes and she tucked away the rebound to score what turned out to be the only goal of the night.
Glendale finished the night with four shot attempts – two from Damaris Samora, and one each from Myla Clay and Taylor Olness. Kruk finished with 13 saves on the night to keep the Gauchos within striking distance to the very end.
