Women’s Soccer Notches Second Straight Shutout

PHOENIX - Six saves from Mayra Kruk and a late scoring outburst secured a 4-0 road win for the Glendale Community College women's soccer team at Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday afternoon.

Kruk leaped to deny a breakaway opportunity for the Pumas in the ninth minute and Glendale took the lead shortly thereafter. After a Mia Robles corner kick was only partially cleared by the Paradise Valley defense, Desirrae Camacho lifted a shot over the head of the Puma keeper to make it 1-0 in the 10th minute. Another Kruk save in the 38th minute kept the Gauchos out in front by a goal heading to the half.

The offense finally got going for Glendale just past the hour mark. Three goals in the span of 13 minutes put the match to rest, with Mia Mendez's first of the year getting things started in the 64th minute. After Kiera Gonzalez collided with a defender in the box, Mendez was able to run onto the ball and poke it home from 15 yards out, making it 2-0.

Kruk was once again strong in the face of goal to stop a header off a corner kick as the clock rolled under 18 minutes remaining and her kick into midfield led quickly to a long-distance goal from Damaris Samora for a 3-0 advantage. The fourth and final goal of the afternoon came from Gonzalez after a free kick from Angie Galvan landed in a swarm of PV defenders but was jarred loose from the keeper and scored at a tight angle.

Samora finished the match with five total shots, while Jaidyn Rowles notched another four. Kruk made six saves in goal, playing the opening 77 minutes before subbing off with the match well in hand.

Now 5-3-0 on the year, next up for Glendale is a home match with Mesa Community College on Oct. 11 starting at 4:45 p.m.
