Women’s Soccer Issues Challenge to Division Leaders

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Glendale Community College women's soccer team took a lead within 30 seconds of the start of the second half before ultimately falling by a score of 2-1 to Phoenix College on Tuesday night. The Gauchos now stand at 3-3-0 overall on the season.

The first half was evenly played between the sides, with Mayra Kruk making a huge diving save to keep the match scoreless for Glendale. Damaris Samora had two of the better scoring opportunities for the Gauchos, hitting one shot just high of the goal and another that rang off the crossbar as the teams went to the half level at 0-0.

Immediately after the restart, Glendale was on the attack. Jaidyn Rowles worked her way into the 18-yard box and had a shot blocked that fell to the feet of April Ramos who instinctively put it away from the edge of the area to stake the Gauchos to a 1-0 lead on the division leaders.

That lead only lasted three minutes. Phoenix's Carmen Coronado poked the ball past Grace Hurley off one hop in the 49th minute to level the match at 1-1. Though the Bears produced more chances in the second half, Glendale was up to the challenge and maintained a 1-1 deadlock until the 78th minute when Amaya Hernandez picked out on a corner after some build-up play through the middle of the field for Phoenix.

Rowles and Samora each ended the night with three shot attempts. Kruk had two first-half saves for Glendale, while Hurley made five in the second half.

The Gauchos will hit the midway point of the regular season on Friday, facing GateWay Community College on the South Mountain CC campus at 1:45 p.m.
