GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Glendale Community College women's soccer team wrapped up an opening two-match home stand with a 4-1 victory over Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday evening, improving to 2-0-0 on the season.
The Gauchos took a lead early in the match, with Taylor Olness scoring on the half-volley in the eighth minute with assists to Myla Clay and Damaris Samora. Despite a hefty advantage in total shots in the first half, Glendale was unable to extend its lead until two seconds remained in the opening 45 minutes. After having a player brought down in the box just before the horn, Samora slotted home on the penalty spot to make it 2-0 in favor of Glendale at the break.
Paradise Valley created more opportunities as the match went along and were rewarded for it when Glendale was whistled for a foul of its own in the penalty area. Mercedez Gallegos picked out a corner on the PK and made it 2-1 in the 64th minute.
That goal seemed to awaken the Gauchos, who answered back with two goals in the next 10 minutes to put the match away. A quick build-up from Jeannette Vazquez to Jaidyn Rowles down the right side ended with a square ball to the middle of the box that Samora put away for her second goal of the night in the 69th minute. Less than five minutes later, Riley Bribiescas played a ball through the middle of the field that Rowles ran onto and finished with her first touch to make it 4-1.
Glendale finished with an 18-6 edge in total shots, putting seven shots on net in the match. Samora led the Gauchos with eight total shots, with four on goal. Mayra Kruk went much of the way in goal for Glendale, making one save. Grace Hurley saw the match out over the final 14 minutes.
Next up for the Gauchos is their first road match of the season, trekking to Mesa Community College on Sept. 13 for a 5:45 p.m. showdown with the Thunderbirds.
