Men’s Soccer Drops Semifinal Match to Pima, 3-1

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Glendale Community College men's soccer team had its season come to a close on Friday night with a 3-1 loss to Pima Community College in the Region I Division II semifinals. The Gauchos finish the season with a record of 9-4-2 overall.

Pima's Leonel Gutierrez was named the ACCAC Division II Player of the Year earlier in the week and he showed up in a massive way for the Aztecs against Glendale. The scoring opened in the 13th minute with a Joost Hermeling goal blasted in from close range following an initial shot from Gutierrez. He then doubled the lead for Pima with a header flicked past Eli Anderson from a corner kick in the 25th minute.

Early on in the second half, Gutierrez's second goal of the night extended the Aztec lead to 3-0 as Lae Soe cut a ball back into the middle of the box after driving toward the end line and Gutierrez put it away with his first touch. Glendale was unable to cut into the deficit until the very end of the match when Jordan Yesenski was brought down in the box and then finished the job by converting the penalty kick in the 87th minute for the final margin.

Anderson finished with four saves on the night. Glendale shots in the match were credited to Yesenski, Abed Abwe, Owen Collins, and Beani Wammunga.
