SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Glendale Community College men's soccer team saw a lead slip away in the final minutes on Saturday night, ending with a 1-1 draw against Scottsdale Community College. The result moves the Gauchos to 7-2-2 on the season and keeps them a point ahead of the Artichokes for third place in the ACCAC standings.
The first half was a battle of attrition early on with no clear chances either way until the 18th minute when Jordan Yesenski chipped in a shot over the head of Scottsdale keeper Landon Johnson. Johnson got a hand to it but couldn't fully stop the momentum of the ball as it found the top corner to give Glendale a 1-0 edge. Scottsdale whistled a free kick outside the post in the 36th minute and three saves from Eli Anderson in the first half kept the Gauchos in front midway through the match.
The second half featured a flurry of action in front of Anderson, but many of Scottsdale's shots were off-target. When the Artichokes did put balls on frame, Anderson continually denied them until the closing minutes. Scoring opportunities for Glendale in the second half included a curled Beani Wammunga free kick over the wall in the 58th minute that was pushed over the bar and a saved half-volley attempt from Jacob Engwall in the 73rd minute.
Those saves from Johnson set the stage for the 84th minute when a foul was whistled in the box on Glendale and Brodi Barone scored from the spot to knot the score at 1-1. Despite a chaotic end-to-end finish, neither team would notch another goal and the teams split the points on the night.
Anderson finished the night with 10 saves. Engwall had four shots to lead the offensive attack for the Gauchos.
Glendale returns home on Tuesday night, hosting Chandler-Gilbert Community College at 7 p.m.
