Late Winner Sees Men’s Soccer Past Paradise Valley

PHOENIX – The Glendale Community College men's soccer team won its third straight match away from home on Tuesday in a 2-1 defeat of Paradise Valley Community College. The win lifts the Gauchos to 6-2-1 on the season.

The first half was often frustrating for Glendale, which produced the better chances throughout the half but failed to have the final touch necessary to tuck a goal away until the 37th minute when Dario Melo Frias spun past his defender on the left wing and delivered a back-post cross to an unmarked Daniel Hernandez Vega who headed in neatly to give the Gauchos a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Paradise Valley pulled it back in the 50th minute with a lofted cross that gave Bryan Romero an opportunity to rise up and head an unstoppable shot past Eli Anderson, leveling the score at 1-1.

With time ticking down and a draw looking like a very real possibility, Glendale showed its resilience with the game-winner coming from Nathan Johansen with less than seven minutes to play. After Santiago Castruita poked the ball away from a Paradise Valley player in midfield and Logan Henley delivered an upfield pass to Jacob Engwall, Engwall dribbled towards the end line and chipped in a pass that Johansen put in the far corner just out of the reach of the keeper.

Anderson earned the win in goal for Glendale, making three saves on the afternoon. The Gauchos enjoyed a 12-7 edge in total shots, with three coming from Jordan Yesenski.

Glendale comes back home on Oct. 11, hosting Mesa Community College beginning at 7 p.m.
