GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Glendale CC men's soccer program put four in the back of the net in the first half of a 5-1 victory over Gateway CC on Saturday evening in the season opener for both teams.
The scoring began shortly after kickoff when Nathan Johansen scored the first of his two on the night, intercepting a poor back-pass from the Geckos and sneaking one in past the diving Gateway keeper to make it 1-0 in the seventh minute. The Gauchos made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when Logan Henley tapped in a ball from about two yards out following a touch from Pablo Morquecho in the six-yard area.
Before the opening half was through, Glendale added goals courtesy of Jacob Engwall on a weighted through ball from Henley in the 32nd minute and then a strike from Luis Barraza in the 44th minute on another Henley feed.
The Gauchos came out of the gates quickly in the second half, scoring less than two minutes in as Johansen guided in a cross from Jordan Yesenski. Ahead 5-0, Glendale easily saw the match out, though Gateway was able to dent the scoreboard in the 53rd minute on a nicely taken shot from the edge of the area by Jesus Guerrero off a free kick.
Eli Anderson earned the victory in goal, making five saves on the night. Glendale outshot Gateway by a 22-6 margin, with 10 total shots on goal. Johansen led the way in that category with five total shots in the match.
The Gauchos are back home again on Tuesday evening, facing Paradise Valley CC beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's match.
