GLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale Community College baseball split their mid-week series with Gateway Community College on Tuesday and Wednesday. The split puts the Gauchos at 14-5 overall, 6-4 in ACCAC play.
Tuesday, February 24th, 7-4 loss
Brock Berlan, Josue Malave, and Logan Leavitt combined to go 6-of-13 from the plate, but it wasn't enough for the Gauchos as they fell to the Geckos, 7-4. Leavitt and Malave combined for 3 of the Gauchos' 4 runs in the contest. The Gauchos had 9 hits in 37 at-bats, leaving 16 men on base.
Jackson Kirby took the loss for the Gauchos, his first loss of the season, after throwing 3 innings, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and striking out 3 of the 18 batters he faced. The Gauchos pitching staff gave up 7 runs (6 earned), on 14 hits and struck out 8 batters for the contest.
Wednesday, February 25th, 15-12 win
Logan Leavitt and Hayden Smith combined for 7 of the Gauchos 15 runs in their victory Wednesday afternoon. Smith was 3-for-5 for the contest and scored 2 runs for the Gauchos on the day. Brock Berlan went 4-for-5 at the plate and scored 5 runs. Cayden Cooper was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs for the Gauchos. The Gauchos had 18 hits in 42 at-bats. They left 22 men on base.
Parker Staheli notched his 4th win of the season for the Gauchos, pitching 2 innings in relief and only giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Chris Peronance and Rolando Valles each threw 3 innings for the Gauchos, with Diego Lovesy throwing one inning on the day. The Gauchos pitchers gave up 11 runs on 21 hits, striking out 5 Gecko batters in the contest.
The Gauchos will look to build more momentum in conference play this weekend, when they host Pima Community College for a Saturday double-header. The Aztecs come into the matchup with a record of 15-6 overall, 8-4 in conference play. Start times for Saturday's contests will be at 12 P.M. and 2:30 P.M. respectively.
