GLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale Community College baseball completed a two-game sweep of South Mountain Community College on February 17th and 18th. With the two wins, the Gauchos sit at 11-3 overall, 4-2 in conference play.
Tuesday February 17th, 5-4 win
9 different Gauchos recorded a hit in Tuesday's contest, leading to a 5-4 victory over the Cougars. Brayden Bullard was 2-for-3 in the contest, and was the only Gaucho with multiple hits on the day. Logan Leavitt hit a home run as his only hit for the contest. Leavitt was 1-for-3 with 2 runs batted in and one walk. Hayden Smith, Trey Butler and Lucas Swanson all had 1 RBI in for the game. The Gauchos had 10 hits in 32 at bats, only striking out 4 times for the contest. They left 15 men on base.
Brady Anderson threw 5 scoreless innings for the Gauchos, striking out 3 batters and walking 2. Rolando Valles pitched 1 and ⅓ innings in relief to pick up the win, his second win of the season. Dominick Maese allowed 1 hit out of the bullpen to pick up his second save of the season for the Gauchos. The pitching staff gave up 4 runs on 8 hits, while walking 6 batters for the game.
Wednesday February 18th, 6-5 win
Andrew Shakespeare went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run batted in during Wednesday's 6-5 win over South Mountain. Shakespeare also scored a run in the contest. Nomar Topete went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and scored a run. Hayden Smith was 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored a run. Diego Chavez and Brock Berlan each had an RBI, with Berlan going 1-for-3 on the day. The Gauchos had 9 hits in 32 at bats. They left 21 men on base.
Jackson Kirby started for the Gauchos, pitching two innings and giving up 5 runs, on 3 hits for the contest. Only two of the five runs were earned for Kirby. Chris Peronace pitched 4 and ⅓ innings in relief for the Gauchos, striking out 5 batters and walking two to pick up the win, his first of the season. Parker Staheli threw 2 and ⅔ scoreless innings, striking out 3 batters to earn the save, his first of the season. The three Gaucho pitchers combined to give up 5 runs on 5 hits, and struck out 8 batters while only walking two.
The Gauchos return to action this week for a two-game series against Chandler-Gilbert Community College this Friday and Saturday. The Coyotes come into the weekend at 10-8 overall, 4-2 in ACCAC play. Friday's game will be played at Chandler-Gilbert while Saturday's contest will be played at Glendale. First pitch for Friday is scheduled for 3 P.M., with Saturday's first pitch scheduled for 12 P.M.
