GLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale Community College baseball split their 2-game set against Mesa Community College this past weekend. With the results from the weekend, the Gauchos moved to 9-3 overall, 2-2 in ACCAC play.
Friday February 13th vs Mesa, 4-0 loss
The Gauchos could only muster up 5 hits in the effort on Friday afternoon, falling to the Thunderbirds 4-0. Josue Malave went 2-4 in the contest with a double. Hayden Smith, Nomar Topete, and Brock Berlan all had one hit in the game, with Berlan also snagging a stolen base, his 5th of the season. In 33 at bats for the game, the Gauchos struck out 11 times and left 18 men on base. Jackson Kirby threw for 5 innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 3 of the 18 batters he faced to open the contest. The Gauchos bullpen threw for 4 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and one walk.
Saturday February 14th at Mesa, 9-3 win
Six different Gaucho recorded a hit in Saturday's victory over Mesa. The Gauchos scored 9 runs on 9 hits to split the series with Mesa, winning 9-3. Josue Malave, Hayden Smith, and Logan Leavitt all had 2 hits, with Brock Berlan, Nomar Topete, and Lucas Andrews recording one hit for the contest as well. Malave and Andrews each knocked in 2 runs batted in for the contest. In 35 at bats for the day, the Gauchos only struck out 3 times, leaving 14 men on base. Aydin Chippindall went 6 innings for the Gauchos, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, but striking out 6 of the 23 batters he faced. Diego Lovesy grabbed the win for the Gauchos, his first of the season, after pitching 2 innings in relief and only giving up 1 hit. Dominick Maese struck out 2 and walked one in his lone inning of relief.
The Gauchos look to continue their hot start to the campaign with two series this week, a mid-week clash against South Mountain Community College on Tuesday and Wednesday, before a weekend series against Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Friday and Saturday. The Cougars come into this series at 10-6 overall, 3-1 in conference play. Tuesday's contest is scheduled for 2 P.M. at Glendale, with Wednesday's contest scheduled for 2 P.M. at South Mountain.
