GLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale Community College baseball started off their season with back-to-back victories over Park University Gilbert JV and Grand Canyon University Club this past week. The Gauchos scored a combined 28 runs over the two games and held both teams to just 4 runs in each contest.
Friday January 23rd vs Park University Gilbert JV
Parker Staheli threw 4 innings and struck out 5 batters to earn his first victory of the season. Andrew Shakespeare and Hayden Smith each had 3 hits for the contest, as the Gauchos combined for 17 hits in 45 at bats. Smith also had 3 stolen bases for the contest. Bryce Bruning, Aydein Chippindall, Dominick Maese, Chris Peronace, and Xander Schramm combined to strike out 5 batters and only give up 1 run on 4 hits in relief for the Gauchos.
Saturday January 24th vs Grand Canyon University Club
Jackson Kirby faced 13 batters, striking out 3 in 3 innings to earn the victory over Grand Canyon University Club Saturday in 7 innings. The Gauchos combined for 10 hits in 25 plate appearances, including home runs by Josue Malave and Lucian Dixon. 7 different Gauchos came away with a stolen base including two from Logan Leavitt. GCC scored 5 runs in the first inning and followed up with 2 more in the second, before scoring 5 runs between the 5th and 6th innings. The Gauchos held GCU scoreless for the first 4 innings of the game before the Antelopes scored 4 in the final 3 innings of the contest.
The Gauchos return to action this week for 4 contests, including three in a row, against Arizona Christian University JV twice, Park University Gilbert JV, and Phoenix College.
