Five from Men’s Soccer Earn All-Region Accolades

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Glendale Community College men’s soccer team had five players named to Region I Division II All-Region team. Two – freshmen Logan Henley and Nathan Johansen – were awarded First Team recognition, while three others – freshman goalkeeper Eli Anderson, freshman defender Daniel Hernandez Vega, and freshman forward Hubert Muka – were named Second Team All-Region.

Leading the way on the first team were Henley and Johansen. Henley started all 15 matches on the season for Glendale and played all over the field at times, going box-to-box as a defensive force and an offensive catalyst. He finished the season with two goals and four assists, but saved his goals for big moments, with both being match-winners for the Gauchos. Johansen ran rampant all season long against opposing defenses, leading Glendale with seven goals (two game-winners) on the season and chipping in with three assists to tie for the team lead with 17 points on the year.

On the second team were the Gaucho trio of Anderson, Hernandez Vega, and Muka. Anderson started 13 matches for Glendale in goal and made 55 saves in his 1,1118:48 of action on the season, finishing with a 2.01 goals-against average. Before suffering a late-season injury that limited his availability, Muka was an offensive force for the Gauchos, playing in 11 matches and making four starts. He finished the year with four goals and two assists, scoring a pair of game-winners. Hernandez Vega usually lined up as a center back, but would come forward in late-game scenarios to great effect. Playing in 14 matches and making eight starts, Hernandez Vega ended the year with four goals and three assists, putting all five of his shots for the season on target and converting those shots into goals at an amazing 80 percent clip.

In the first season for Head Coach Jeff Perry, the Glendale men’s squad finished third in the ACCAC with a 9-3-2 record. Taking the No. 3 seed into the Region I Division II semifinals, the Gauchos fell, 3-1, to Pima Community College, finishing the year at 9-4-2 overall. Along the way, Glendale was ranked nationally both in the NJCAA National Poll and the United Soccer Coaches National Poll.
